What about a story- particularly romance, in more detail historical romances - that gets you going? what pulls you into the story? What about characters makes you love or love to hate them? Is there anything/way in particular you love about places/certain points in history?

I love the Regency and Medievel periods especially the Scottish history dating around the time of William Wallace or shortly thereafter. As for what pulls me into a story, the attraction between the hero and the heroine is a definite pull as well as the circumstances that bring them together. I love historical romance because men had to be men back then, strong and protective, always looking out for their women where the women had more restrictions and propriety was a way of life. There were rules that had to be followed and men were honorable and did what was right. I dislike when the two main characters fight over silly things though. Don't get me wrong, some tension and fighting between the couple can make a story interesting and amusing but when an author keeps a couple fighting over trivial things throughout the book, that can make me begin to really dislike them. Most of the time I don't get bothered by the characters and accept their flaws without a qualm. For me though the Scottish historicals and the Regency England time periods are fascinating.
I love historical romance set in almost any time, but I particularly like reading those set in American history, particularly centering around the Civil War. I love the chivalry of that period. Men were strong and protective of their women, but women were also starting to break out of their expected roles and daring to take on men's sterotypical views of the Victorian woman. For me, it's just pure fun to escape to another time and lose myself in a sweeping romance between a man and woman from a time long ago.
